ALFREDO PARRISH

Parrish is founder and senior partner of Parrish Kruidenier Trial Lawyers, L.L.P., a 17-lawyer firm in Des Moines, Iowa. He was born in Selma, Alabama, and received his law degree from the University of Iowa. He has argued more than 250 appeals in state and federal courts, including the landmark U.S. Supreme Court case, Pepper v. United States, 131 S.Ct.1229 (2011). He has represented clients in over 200 civil and criminal jury trials, including the first federal “three-strikes” case, Iowa’s first death-penalty case in 40 years, and over 30 first-degree murder trials.  He has represented clients in 66 of Iowa’s 99 counties. He has been selected for “Best Lawyers in America” 15 years running.

 

Statewide Practice:  criminal defense, personal injury, civil rights, immigration, employment, and appellate law.

 

Bar Admissions:  Iowa; U.S. District Court for the Northern and Southern Districts of Iowa, Nebraska, and Western District of Texas; U.S. Courts of Appeals for the 5th, 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th Circuits; and, the U.S. Supreme Court.

Recent appearances include keynote speeches to the NAACP in Ames (February 1, 2013) and Des Moines (November 8, 2014), and criminal law seminars before the IACDL (“Criminal Law Challenged,” November 4, 2016; “Criminal Law and Procedure,” November 20, 2015, and November 13, 2014); and “25 Years of Service to the Criminal Bar,” November 3, 2017).

 

Publications: Outside In, Chapter 11, “History of African American Lawyers in Iowa” (2002); Know Your Rights, A Guide Through Iowa’s Criminal Justice System (1995); A Legal Guide for Family Farmers in Iowa (1985); and two jazz albums featuring the Irene Myles Trio.

 

Community Service:  Boards of Directors for the University of Iowa Law School Foundation (2004-present); Community Foundation of Greater Des Moines (2010-2015); University of Dubuque (1998-2005); Des Moines Art Center (1997-2005); Des Moines University (1994-2003); and, Des Moines Public Library Foundation (2004-08). Personal:  Parrish enjoys biking, running, golfing, history and music.  He is married with four children.
