For over 25 years, Mr. Shevin’s legal practice has focused exclusively in the area of cannabis law, defending clients in State and Federal courts across the nation. Mr. Shevin has won significant victories for his clients in California, Arizona, Hawaii, Louisiana, Missouri, Nevada, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, Arkansas, Oklahoma and Wisconsin.  Mr. Shevin also provides counsel to lawful cannabis cultivators, processors, distributors, dispensary and delivery outlets on issues involving legal structure, business formation, tax reporting and compliant business operations.  Mr. Shevin’s client list includes cannabis industry leaders in all aspects of the cannabis industry.  Mr. Shevin also assists clients with brand development, trademark and marketing solutions. Through his extensive experience, Mr. Shevin possesses advanced knowledge of the laws pertaining to the cannabis regulatory landscape and providing guidance to business groups in the emerging cannabis industry.

 

Throughout his career, Mr. Shevin has been an advocate for sensible marijuana regulations and has taught courses in cannabis law and policy to Judges and Lawyers throughout the country. Mr. Shevin is a lifetime member of the NORML Legal Committee, dedicated to the reform of marijuana laws. Mr. Shevin was awarded the Defender of Justice Award by California’s advocacy group, Americans for Safe Access. Mr. Shevin is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court.

Mr. Shevin was a partner in a high volume criminal defense practice specializing in marijuana matters, illegal search and seizure and unauthorized destruction of evidence.  Through daily courtroom litigation experience, Mr. Shevin is aware of the legal trends first hand and how the changing legal landscape has evolved in the courts.

EDUCATION AND TRAINING

Mr. Shevin received his Juris Doctor degree from the University of San Diego in 1992.  Mr. Shevin completed a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Judge Bernard Revak of the San Diego Superior Court and interned with the San Diego County District Attorney’s office, Juvenile Division.

Mr. Shevin obtained his Bachelor of Science degree at San Diego State University in 1989.  He is past President of the Financial Management Association’s National Honor Society.

Through over 25 years of daily courtroom experience, Mr. Shevin has developed extensive knowledge of all issues concerning marijuana and medical marijuana, including but not limited to defending marijuana cases in State and Federal court, cannabis yield ratios, medical efficacy of marijuana, and State Guidelines for the operation of cooperatives, collectives and dispensaries.  Mr. Shevin was successful introducing medical marijuana into evidence in a Federal Criminal Matter in the case of USA v. Steele Smith which was unprecedented at the time.  Mr. Shevin was counsel to author Jack Herer, who pioneered the modern hemp movement with his groundbreaking best seller, “The Emperor Wears No Clothes”, first published in 1985.
