Bio

Matthew J. Chalker has been recognized by his peers as a Super Lawyers Rising Star since 2015.  His practice focuses on appeals, complex motions practice, DUI/DWI and criminal defense, medical malpractice and personal injury.  He has represented a broad spectrum of individuals and families in the medical malpractice and personal injury portion of his practice, handling cases ranging from catastrophic injuries caused by medical negligence, to auto accidents and slip and falls.  In his criminal practice, Mr. Chalker represents clients charged with a wide array of payable and jailable offenses, ranging from serious felonies to misdemeanors, and DUI/DWI to payable traffic tickets.  In the area of Appellate practice, Matthew has handled administrative appeals and appeals in Maryland and Federal Courts.

Prior to embarking on his own, Matthew practiced in a plaintiffs’ medical malpractice and personal injury firm and a boutique medical malpractice defense firm where he represented physicians who had been sued for medical malpractice in multi-million dollar lawsuits before state and federal courts.  In each firm, Matthew's practice was split between trial work and appeals/complex motions practice.  Having practiced on “both sides” of the court room, Matthew learned, from the inside, the nuts and bolts of how to prosecute personal injury and medical malpractice lawsuits, and how insurance companies evaluate those cases for defense.  Moreover, having handled appeals for plaintiffs and defendants, Matthew has seen what goes into each sides' decision making process as far as determining whether to file an appeal, and if an appeal is filed, the process of moving through the appeal.  Many of the cases he has handled have been tried to verdict before juries.  He now applies this knowledge for the benefit of his clients.

Before that, Matthew served as an Assistant State’s Attorney for Anne Arundel County where he prosecuted and achieved convictions on misdemeanor and felony cases by way of jury trial, bench trial, and guilty plea.  Matthew uses the knowledge and experience he gained as a prosecutor for the benefit of his clients who have been charged with a crime.

Matthew graduated from the University of Baltimore School of Law, with honors, where he was the Managing Editor of the University of Baltimore Journal of Environmental Law.  He received his B.A. from the University of Maryland, College Park.
